So to sum up competitive is fun because there's a sense of achievement for winning and progressing against people of even or slightly better skill. The thing is though despite them being competitive if a person genuinely likes to just screw around they won't level up and can do so without getting wrecked. There's a reason that Halo 2 and 3, the most 'competitive' online Halo games were also the most populated for the longest amount of time. Halo needs that underlying competitive layer to keep the population around that creates even games for every skill level that allows the player to progress at a steady pace. All these players weren't hardcore and most played just for the fun but that competitive nature that the game made kept them coming back. In Halo 2/3 with real ranks practically every game you got into even at lower levels people would have their mics in making callouts and playing for the win because there was incentive to actually win. I see any player who boots up a game and wants to win as being competitive, which is why I see the majority of Halo's community as being competitive players. I think lately people have come to think of the word competitive as only applying to hardcore MLG customs players when that just isn't true. Of course, there will be bitching, since this is the internet. They are taking what made Halo great, fix what wasn't working well in the previous game, and eliminated what didnt work at all while adding in new things that are in line with the game instead of making the game work for the new features.īy doing so, the "hardcore" and "casual" community is satisfied. No one in MLG wants to hold a tourney because there is no audience because neither side of the spectrum was happy with the game. No hardcore player wanted to play it because the features went entirely on what made Halo "Halo".

The game's features only created a frustrating mess of a game that no casual gamer want to spend what little free time they have to play and enjoy. What Halo 4 did was the wrong way to appeal to casual audiences. However, it is good to support the casual as they provide the bulk of the sales. Its good to support the Hardcore players by giving them what they want (which is something that is very simple to do in the custom options settings). I understand that unless you have that competitive nature when it comes to games it's hard to comprehend, but I hope I've shed some light on the matter. Ranking up, communicating with your team to win, and playing a game to the best of their ability is how some have fun (including myself), but warthog flips and infection are enjoyed by as many people (if not more) I play Halo and sports for the purpose of fun first, and winning just after that. They've spoke a little about larger scale battles, but are keeping it under wraps.ĭo you play sports? If you do, competitive Halo (and other games) share similarities with wanting to win in sports. The beta demonstrated arena-style gameplay with equal starts, which after the loadout-infested Halo 4 people were happy to see. Halo: Reach and Halo 4 both had great BTB modes, and other 'casual' modes, yet many found the competitive edge lacking. The reason you probably see more people pushing for competitive Halo is because recent installments haven't done a great job at competitive Halo. Football, Halo, a foot race - I will enjoy it because I get to test myself.

The highlights of my time in Halo are those friends I made and laughed and played with, and playing in customs with pro players for the last several months leading up to Reach's release.

By myself, I could still ladder Halo for hours and love every minute of it. With friends, I'd play every dumb infection/cops and robbers/race map under the sun.

I played Cod 4 too, but Halo 3 was by far the biggest draw for me. Over the course of a year or so of being casual - bad - I got more and more into MLG, because I love competition. I dropped basketball and swim, picked up H3, and it took over a lot of my time. When I was twelve, I was playing four sports (baseball, basketball, football, swimming). I choose to play the former (Halo, League of Legends, Counterstrike) because I want to take on challenges. I play two types of video games generally: Competitive multiplayer and RPGs.
